Introduction Menstrual psychosis was first described in the 18th century. Brockington defined its characteristics: acute onset; brief duration with full recovery; confusion, stupor and mutism, delusions, hallucinations, or a manic syndrome periodicity temporal association menstrual cycle. Objectives Description of clinical case review literature. Methods case. Non systematic literature, searching terms “psychosis”; “menstrual”; “catamenial” databases Pubmed, Medline Cochrane. Results Female, 39-year-old patient. No psychiatric history until postpartum period traumatic vaginal birth, when she developed mutism which lasted for two days. During following 2 years, progressively presented sadness, asthenia, anhedonia, insomnia incapacity self-care. She prescribed paroxetine olanzapine, partial recovery. Subsequently, had at least 6 episodes about 3-day food refusal, insomnia, self-care, disorganization thought behavior mystical persecutory coincident beginning menstruation. hospitalized them received treatment venlafaxine 75mg paliperidone 6mg, psychotic symptoms remission after week. Conclusions This presents characteristics psychosis. is rare condition, only 30 reported cases worldwide. According to current classification systems, this condition fulfills diagnostic criteria disorder. Nonetheless, studying more detail disorder could be interesting, goal deepening knowledge neurobiology psychosis, particularly effects estrogen on Disclosure significant relationships.
